Moorhead, Minn. – The Saint Benedict basketball team fell 70-56 on the road to Concordia on Wednesday night (Feb. 19), seeing their two-game winning streak end, and their playoff hopes dashed in the process.
Â
The Blazers (12-12, 8-12 MIAC) came into the game riding the momentum of wins over Macalester and Carleton, and as things played out around the league last night, a win would have put CSB in the driver's seat for the final spot in the MIAC Tournament.
Â
Still, however, with Gustavus also losing last night, the Blazers are still in the postseason mix, but they need a win and losses by Augsburg and Gustavus on Saturday to advance.
Â
The Cobbers (20-4, 18-3 MIAC) hit a three on their second trip down the floor, and never trailed, going up by as many as 13 in the first half before taking a 32-24 lead into the intermission. The Blazers closed the first half on a 7-to-2 run, though, spurred by five straight points from
Jordan Falk, part of her 10 on the night.
Â
In the second half, the Cobbers then shot 50% (15-of-30) from the field and led by double-digits over the final 11 minutes. Furthermore, they also hit six threes in the second half, part of a 10-of-20 night from behind the arc.
Â
The Blazers were able to hang around, just four or five points from tying the game early in the second, but a 9-to-2 Cobber run, capped by an Erika Jossart three-pointer with over seven minutes to go put the Cobbers up 54-38 and in control the rest of the way.
Â
Jossart went on to lead the Cobbers with 16 points.
Â
The Blazers'
Mattie Lueck led all scorers with 17 points, also collecting her second double-double of the season with 11 rebounds. Falk was the only other Blazer in double-figures.Â
Â
The Blazers finished the night shooting 43% (23-of-53) from the field, but they were hampered by 20 turnovers and just an 8-of-12 mark from the free throw line. The Cobbers turned the Blazer miscues into 29 points, while also adding 14 off their 11 offensive rebounds.
Â
The Blazers will now look to get a win and some help in the regular season finale. They wrap up the 2013-14 season at home, hosting St. Thomas at 3 p.m., Feb. 22 in Claire Lynch Hall on Senior Day.
