Third-period power play goal lifts Cardinals past Saint Benedict

WINONA, Minn. – Heading into the third period of Friday's game against Saint Mary's, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team looked like it was in good shape.

A pair of second-period goals put the Blazers up 2-1 on the Cardinals and CSB had successful killed Saint Mary's one power play early in the game.

But the Cardinals came out hot in the third period and tied the game 2-2 less than a minute into the final period, and scored the eventual game-winner with less than eight minutes left to play on a power play – their second of the night – to beat the Blazers 3-2 in a MIAC game in Winona, Minn.

Saint Benedict is now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC. Saint Mary's is 1-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.

Saint Mary's started the scoring Friday night when Molly Abraham scored an unassisted goal at the 5:26 mark of the first period. The Cardinals held that lead until the second period when a pair of CSB goals put the Blazers up 2-1. Stephanie Kirk scored her fourth goal of the year off an assist from Elli Marvin to tie the game at 1-1, and Aly Hoffman put the Blazers up 2-1 with just over a minute left in the period off an assist from Kennedy Hageness.

That lead lasted just 56 seconds into the third period, however, when Abraham scored her second goal of the game to tie it at 2-2. The score stayed tied until the 12:21 mark when Lindsay Paschke scored on a power play goal to put Saint Mary's up 3-2, and that score held through the end of the game.

The Cardinals had 25 shots to CSB's 16. Hoffman led the Blazers with four shots and Marvin had two. Senior goalie Jenna Traut made 22 saves for CSB, including 12 in the first period. Saint Benedict had three penalties for six minutes and the Cardinals had two for four minutes.

The two teams face off again at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 in Winona, Minn.
