Winona, Minn. -- After losing a nail-biter Friday night, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (3-4, 2-2 MIAC) fell short Saturday, dropping the back-end of the weekend double header 0-2 against the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University (2-3-1, 2-1-1 MIAC). With the weekend loss, the Blazers fall to the middle of the pack in the MIAC standings.
Â
The Cardinals scored two goals in the first period to give themselves a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
Â
The first goal came at the 4:28 mark with Saint Mary's playing shorthanded. Cardinal forward Kassie Lien set up a goal for teammate McKenna Parent who promptly gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Â
Later in the first, the Cardinals got the game's only other goal, when Mary Debartolo took a pass from Breanna Peterson and converted it into another Cardinal goal. Peterson has three assists and one goal in her past two games against Saint Ben's.
Â
The game was scoreless the rest of the way, with the Blazers unable to find the net despite outshooting the Cardinals 9-8 in the third period. Senior goalie Jenna Trout made 21 saves on 23 shots faced, and shutout the Cardinals in the second and third periods.
Â
The Blazers had only three penalties in the game, matching their lowest total this season.
Â
Blazer hockey is off for Thanksgiving break and then returns to action the following Tuesday (Dec. 2) when they will host Wisconsin-River Falls. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
