Hockey Sweeps Oles

NORTHFIELD, Minn -- The College of Saint Benedict hockey team (3-2, 2-0 MIAC) completed the MIAC season-opening sweep against Saint Olaf College Saturday, defeating the Oles by a 6-3 score. The Blazers defeated the Oles 5-3 at home Friday night. With the win, the Blazers remain undefeated in the MIAC.

Sophomore forward Elli Marvin led the offensive charge for the Blazers, scoring twice and assisting another goal. Marvin led the team with three goals and one assist in two games against St. Olaf this weekend.

Despite five power plays between both teams, the game remained scoreless after the first period. The Blazers fired 11 shots on goal, but were not able to get one past Ole goalie Halley Sampson.

Halfway through the second, the Blazers took advantage of their fifth powerplay of the game to break the scoreless tie. Marvin fired a shot past Sampson to score her first goal of the game and put the Blazers up 1-0.

Just two minutes later, first-year forward Brigette Miller made it a two-goal lead, scoring off an assist from fellow first-year Kimberly Patterson.

Later in the second period, Ole forward Devyn Hotho scored her third goal of the series, closing the gap to 2-1 at the end of the second.

After a strong third period won them the game last night, the Blazers came out roaring in the third today, scoring just 16 seconds after the faceoff. Stephanie Kirk, the reigning Blazer Athlete of the Week, scored off assists from Miller and Marvin to put the Blazers up 3-1.

Three minutes later, Marvin sealed the victory with an unassisted goal that gave the Blazers a 4-1 lead they would never relinquish.

Despite two Ole goals later in the period, the Blazers held on to win the game 6-3. Junior forwards Aly Hoffman and Liz Hermes added goals late in the period to give the Blazers six goals, their largest offensive onslaught so far this season.

The Blazers outshot the Oles 30-24 and went 1-for-6 on the power play.

The Blazers return to action next Friday (Nov. 21) and Saturday (Nov.22)  when they will head to Winona to play two road games against St. Mary's . Face Off for Friday night's game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
