COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – In its last game of the regular season, the Saint Benedict soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 overtime loss to the Cobbers of Concordia.
The Blazers, who had already secured a spot in the MIAC playoffs, end the regular season with an overall record of 14-4 and an 8-3 mark in conference play. The Blazers also finished the season with a home record of 7-1.
Saint Benedict entered Saturday's game knowing it needed to win to clinch at least a share of the MIAC regular-season title, but the Cobbers knew they needed to win or tie to move up in the standings. With the Concordia win, the Cobbers moved up to first in the conference pending the Augsburg/St. Thomas game that starts at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Blazers learn their fate for the MIAC tournament Saturday evening after regular-season conference play is finished. With the Augsburg/UST game left to play, CSB is currently tied for second with 24 points with the Auggies and Carleton and Concordia leads the MIAC with 26 points. Augsburg and Carleton have a head-to-head advantage over the Blazers thanks to regular-season wins.
The Blazers once again showcased their tough defense as they held the Cobbers to just four shots on goal in the first half. Both teams played a very balanced half as each team finished with five shots.
Taylor Hedin led the team with two shots in the half and also took both of the team's shots on goal.
The second half was much more offense-dominated as the Cobbers added 12 more shots and the Blazers took another eight. The Cobbers scored first and took an early 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the second half when Elizabeth Robinson scored an unassisted goal off a rebound.
From here, the Blazers fought hard for the majority of the half to tie the game. With less than seven minutes remaining in the game,
Gracie Vaughan scored her sixth goal of the season off an assist from
Aly Hoffman. This gave Hoffman her seventh assist of the season and tied the game at 1-1.
The two teams then headed into overtime where the Cobbers managed to get through a tough Blazer defense to score their second goal of the day with just over two minutes remaining in the overtime period. Sadie Hayes scored the game-winner off an assist from Libby Fransdal off a corner kick.
Hedin led the offense Saturday with three shots on goal while Vaughan and Renier each added another two. Goalkeeper
Heather Kaluzniak finished the night with 10 saves.
