Blazers fall to Tommies in shootout in MIAC Quarterfinals

MIAC Tournament Page

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Saint Benedict soccer team ended its season in dramatic fashion Tuesday, Nov. 4, in a MIAC Quarterfinal game against St. Thomas.

For just the second time all year, the Blazers needed double overtime to decide a winner, and when 110 minutes wasn't enough, the game went all the way to a shootout.

After the fourth-seeded Blazers led for the majority of the game, the No. 5 Tommies came back to tie the game with under two minutes remaining in regulation. After the score remained tied at 1-1 at the end of both overtime periods, the game came down to a shootout. From here, the Tommies captured the win with a 2-0 win in the shootout.

In the first half, the Blazers (14-4-1) controlled the game very well with a defense as hard as nails, and an offense that was putting a lot of pressure on the Tommies' defensive core. By keeping the ball away from the Tommies, the Blazer defense, which didn't allow a single shot on goal in the first half, freed the offense to take control.

As a team, the Blazers finished the first half with 11 shots; tying the amount they finished the game with in their last matchup against St. Thomas. Kelsey Tatarek led the Blazers with three shots as Brooke DeMets and Sydney Bramer each added another two.

The second half was much more even as the Tommies (8-7-4) responded with eight shots compared to the Blazers' six. Each teams also added three shots on goal. Aly Hoffman scored the first goal of the game and put CSB up 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 74th minute.

That lead held for 14 more minutes when, 88 minutes into the game, the Tommies tied the game up at 1-1 with very little time for the Blazers to respond. By the end of regulation time, the Blazers racked up 17 shots and seven shots on goal.  Goalkeeper Heather Kaluzniak also finished regulation with two saves.

In overtime, the Blazers' defense once again didn't allow the Tommies a single shot on goal and let up only one shot through both periods. The Blazers' offense took six more shots in these two periods, but the score remained at 1-1 after the time expired. From here, the Tommies scored on each of their first two shootout attempts and keeper Taryn Theilig stopped all four of the Blazers' shots.

St. Thomas moves on to face No. 1 Augsburg at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in a MIAC semifinal game.
