COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Saint Benedict soccer team improved its record to 14-3 Wednesday, Oct. 29, with a close 1-0 win over St. Catherine.
The Blazers are currently tied for first place in the MIAC and are now 8-2 in conference play. After climbing back into the national rankings this week, the Blazers now sit at No. 25 in the country and have won five of their last six games.
A tenacious Blazers' defense, led by junior captain
Ellie Mullen, held the Wildcats to just three shots on goal in the first half. By the end of the half, both teams had managed to shut down any offensive threat as the Blazers forced only six shots and the score was tied 0-0.
Ali Ryan-Mosley led the offense with two shots and goalkeeper
Heather Kaluzniak finished the half with three saves.
After 68 minutes with no score,
Gracie Vaughan gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead with an assist from
Aly Hoffman. This gave Vaughan her fifth goal of the season and brought Hoffman into a tie with Vaughan for a team high of six assists. The Blazers continued to play strong defense throughout the second half and let up only two shots on goal despite losing a player to a red card.
The Blazers will move on to face Concordia in their last regular-season game this Saturday, Nov. 1. The game will be held in Collegeville and 1 p.m. and will be the Blazers' last chance to gain sole leadership in the MIAC.
Both CSB and Augsburg enter Saturday's games tied for first with 8-2 MIAC marks. The Auggies host St. Thomas Saturday afternoon.
