WINONA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team is back at the top of the MIAC after shutting out Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers scored 30 seconds into the game and added one more goal in a 2-0 win over the Cardinals in Winona, Minn. With the win, CSB moves into a tie for first place in the league with Augsburg College. Both teams have 7-2 MIAC records. The Blazers, who are 13-3 overall, have shut out 12 opponents this season.
It didn't take long for Saint Benedict to get on the board Saturday afternoon.
Taylor Hedin scored the first goal of the game just 30 seconds in when she scored off an assist from
Nicole Bauer.
Saint Benedict held onto that 1-0 lead until the 36
th minute when
Reina Nelson scored her first goal of the season off assists from
Kelsey Tatarek and
Gracie Vaughan to put CSB up 2-0.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second half, and the Blazers held on for the win. CSB had eight shots to the Cardinals' two, and had four shots on goal to Saint Mary's one.
Heather Kaluzniak made one save for the Blazers, who had seven shots in the first half.
Saint Benedict returns home for its final two games of the regular season. The Blazers host St. Kate's at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at SJU Field #2 in Collegeville, Minn. CSB wraps up the regular season Saturday, Nov. 1, at home against Concordia.
