Blazer soccer picks up key shutout against St. Thomas

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict women's soccer team picked up a key MIAC win and avenged one of its two conference losses from last season Tuesday afternoon when it shut out St. Thomas 2-0 in Collegeville, Minn.

The Tommies were able to shock Saint Benedict last season, winning 2-1 in St. Paul, but that wasn't the case this year.

The game was scoreless at halftime despite numerous first-half shots on goal by the Blazers. Peggy Renier put two shots on goal, including a free kick that was punched over the net by Tommies goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig. CSB put four shots on goal to UST's one in the first half.

The Blazers broke the game open 11 minutes into the second half. Aly Hoffman scored the first goal of the game in the 56th minute when she took a pass from Gracie Vaughan and kicked the ball past Theilig from the right side of the goal.

That 1-0 lead stood for just under a minute and a half when Megan Lenz put the Blazers up by two goals. Lenz scored off an assist from Hoffman in the front of the net. This set of goals gave Hoffman her sixth goal and fifth assist of the season. Hoffman added another two shots in the second half and the team finished with 11 on the night.

The Blazers had 11 shots to the Tommies' eight, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Kaluzniak finished with three saves for Saint Benedict in its 11th shutout of the season.

Saint Benedict is now 12-2 overall and 6-1 and in second place in the MIAC. Concordia leads the conference race with a 6-0-1 record, the Blazers are 6-1 and Carleton is in third with a 5-0-1 mark.

The Blazers have now won 12 of their last 13 games and are sitting at No. 21 in the national rankings. After their first loss since August against Carleton, the Blazers have responded with three consecutive wins. This recent success has fueled a big momentum swing as they head into four consecutive MIAC matchups. The Blazers will go on to face off against Augsburg on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in Minneapolis. With only four games left in the regular season, the Blazers will be looking to continue their winning streak as they look ahead to the MIAC playoffs in November.
