Mequon, Wis. – The Saint Benedict hockey team got off to a hot start tonight (Jan. 3) on the road, but couldn't sustain it, eventually falling 3-1 to Concordia University Wisconsin.
The Blazers got themselves on the board first late in the first period, with
Ally Nielsen scoring at the 15:19 mark. It was Nielsen's second goal of the season, and came off assists from
Alli O'Brien and
Christine Brodersen.
The Blazers (3-7-0) have had a knack for striking first this season, but what has plagued them has been continuing that momentum, and they were unable to again tonight.
After taking the lead with under five minutes to go in the first, they watched the Falcons (6-4-0) tie it right back up at 1-1 before the period would end. At the 17:53 mark, Concordia scored the first of its three goals on the night, sending the game into the first intermission tied.
Like the first, the second period would go scoreless until there were under five minutes left to play. The Falcons took just five shots in the period, compared to the Blazers 14, but it was CUW who came away with the eventual game-winner, scoring a shorthanded goal to go ahead 2-1.
A late third period goal rounded out the scoring, and send the Blazers to the 3-1 loss.
For just the fourth time all season, the Blazer offense was held under two goals in a game.
The Blazers will look to even things up tomorrow when the two teams square off in game-two. The Puck drops at 2 p.m.
