Mequon, Wis. – The Saint Benedict hockey team went goal-for-goal with Concordia University Wisconsin today (Jan. 4), eventually holding on for a 6-5 win, earning the series split in the process.

All 11 goals were scored over the final 40 minutes and the Blazers (4-7-0) never trailed after opening up a 2-0 lead. But each time the Blazers tried to pull away, the Falcons (6-5-0) would answer back with a score.

They were fortunate to get out of the first period with no score, as the Falcons put the pressure on with a 9-to-4 edge in shots in the period. The Blazers took a penalty early, and CUW responded by peppering the net for six shots over the two minute stretch.

After getting through the first scoreless, the Blazers blew open the game in the second. Three different players found the net as CSB took a 3-1 edge after 40:00 minutes. Stephanie Kirk started the scoring rally at the 5:05 mark, scoring on the power play on an assist from Hannah Esselman.

The Blazers also scored first last night, but saw the lead erased by three unanswered Falcon goals. There would be no such scoring spree today, as Liz Hermes made it a 2-0 Blazer advantage just five minutes later.

Concordia Wisconsin would quickly answer back, however, with its first goal of the game, less than 90 seconds later. But the Blazers second-period-surge wasn't over, scoring again on the power play in the period. Christine Brodersen scored at the 14:16 mark – all four goals were less than 10 minutes apart – to regain the Blazers' two-goal lead at 3-1. And that's where it would stay heading into the third.

For all the craziness of the second, the third period was all that and more. Three times the Blazers appeared to have the clinching goal, but the Falcons responded every time, even into the final minute where they scored to make it 6-5 with just 54 seconds left.

The Blazers started the scoring just 1:02 in, with Tara Frey getting into the mix. The Falcons would answer, but then less than a minute later the Blazers were back up three after Allison Kirk made it a 5-2 game just 3:35 into the period.

Things then got really interesting, as Concordia scored back-to-back goals for the first time all game and was within one with nearly half a period left. Six scoreless minute minutes went by, however, and with under three minutes to go, the Blazers went up 6-4 on their third power play goal of the game.

Stephanie Kirk closed the game with her team-leading eighth goal of the season for the final nail in the coffin. The Falcons got one back in the final minute for the final 6-5 score, but it was just not enough as the Blazers held on.
