St. Cloud, Minn. – The Saint Benedict swimming and diving team took a 173-118 loss at nearby St. Cloud State on Friday (Jan. 17), getting wins in five events.

Stephanie Bierman (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the way for the Blazers with three total wins on the day, winning twice individually, while adding a relay win.

She started with a win in the 50-yard freestyle, out-touching the wall over three swimmers from SCSU in the top-four with her 24.84. Then in a rare appearance in the 200-breaststroke, Bierman scored her second win of the day, stopping the clock in 1:12.24 to win by three seconds.

Finally, Bierman closed her day by anchoring the Blazers' winning 200-freestyle relay team. Laura Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.), Abbie Gerdes (Moorhead, Minn.), Meghan Harder (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Bierman teamed up for a 1:42.65, for the Blazer's final win of the day.

In the 100-back, Jenna Humbert (Hastings, Minn.) added a win with a 1:04.32, beating the field by five seconds.

Ellen Dean (Bothell, Wash.) then added another win to her season with a victory in the 200-yard IM, touching the wall in 2:26.96.

After competing well with one of the top Division II teams in the nation – a team that placed 16th at DII Nationals last season – the Blazers will now turn their attention to the Meet of the Saints on Saturday (Jan. 18). Hosted by St. Thomas, the Blazers will also be squaring off with St. Olaf, starting at 9 a.m.
