Superior, Wis. – The Saint Benedict hockey team took another step forward tonight (Jan. 11), battling all 60 minutes with No. 9 UW-Superior before falling 1-0.

A lone first period goal from the Yellowjackets (11-2-4) proved to be the difference, as they scored at the 5:41 mark of the period. UW-Superior's Haley Olmstead beat Blazer goalkeeper Dory Johnson (Bovey, Minn.) for the game's only score.

Johnson was making just her second start of the season, but played brilliantly between the pipes, stopping 27 shots for the best mark of her career. The Yellowjackets poured in five goals last night, and have been scoring in bunches lately, but Johnson held them to their lowest output since Nov. 22, just the second time all season they've been held to a single goal.

The Blazers (4-9-0) were outshot 9-to-4 in the first period as the Yellowjackets went ahead, but played nearly even over the final two periods, as the two teams played scoreless. In total, the Blazers were outshot 28-to-19, but limited the Yellowjackets to a 19-to-15 edge over the final two periods.

On the night, the Blazers killed off a pair of Yellowjacket power plays, and did not allow a power play goal all weekend.

With nonconference play wrapped up for the year, the Blazers will now turn their attention to MIAC play, as that is all that remains over the final six weeks of the schedule. With three of their remaining series against teams either ranked or receiving votes on the national polls, this weekend's experience and confidence gained against one of the best will serve them well.

MIAC play resumes next weekend on the road at Concordia, with game times set for 7 p.m. on Jan. 17, and 2 p.m. on Jan. 18.
