Volleyball Looks to Rebound

After suffering its first loss of the season on Wednesday, the No. 10 Blazer volleyball team returns home to host St. Catherine.

The Blazers return home with a 5-0 record in Claire Lynch Hall.

Back Home: The No. 10 Saint Benedict volleyball team is back at home to face off against St. Catherine (6-9, 0-1 MIAC) for their second MIAC matchup of the season. The two teams serve it up at 3 p.m., Sept. 21 in at Claire Lynch Hall. Coming off their first loss of the season, the 11-1 (0-1 MIAC) Blazers are looking to come back strong for their next four games, which are all against MIAC teams.
 
About the Wildcats: The Wildcats are currently in a two-game losing streak and are playing the Blazers in the middle of a six game stretch of MIAC play. With a record of 6-9 – including a 3-1 loss to St. Olaf to open MIAC play on Wedneday - the Wildcats need a strong push through their next six MIAC matchups. After the Blazers, St. Kate's will go on to play St. Thomas on the road which will be another challenge in the road towards the MIAC Tournament. The Wildcats have struggled in the early season, posting just a .132 attack percentage and 10.85 kills per set, which each rank last in the conference.
 
The Storyline: After their first loss of the season, the Blazers are looking to come back with a strong win to regain their momentum through their MIAC stretch. With 10 sweeps already this season, the Blazers are ranked No. 10 in the country and are in need of MIAC wins as they sit at 0-1 in the conference.
 
Who to Watch: Taya Kockelman (Minneota, Minn.) opened the week as the NCAA leader in assists per set at 11.77. After another 40 against Augsburg on Wednesday, she now is now even better, averaging 11.91 per set. Lexi Alm (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn.) are currently in the second and third spot in the MIAC in service aces per set, Alm with 0.56 and Rachel with 0.48. Lexi Rinde (Minnetonka, Minn.) is second in the MIAC in hitting percentage with an average of .381 and has racked up 115 kills so far this season. Alm is sitting right behind her with 114 kills and a .256 hitting percentage on the season. Rachel has put up great numbers defensively this season and leads the Blazers in digs with 3.76 per set. As a team, the Blazers' hitting percentage of .265 places them at the top of the MIAC, while their mark of .273 at the beginning of the week was the best in the country.

Last Time Out: In their last time out, the Blazers suffered their first loss by a score of 0-3 to the Auggies. The Blazers came out strong but couldn't finish with a win in the first set, as they fell 23-25. In the second set, the Blazers fought hard once again but came up short and took a 22-25 loss. In the third and final set, the surprisingly tough Auggies came out hard and walked away with a 25-17 win.
