Eau Claire, Wis. – The Saint Benedict tennis team scored two wins today (Sept. 14), opening with an 8-1 win over UW-River Falls, before closing the day with a 6-3 win over host UW-Eau Claire.
The Blazers opened the day with a 3-0 run through doubles action against UWRF, which included an 8-2 win at the top spot from
Jamie Hoffman (Bemidji, Minn.) and
Laura Finn (Delano, Minn.).
But it was in singles play where the Blazers really hit the gas, as each of the top-four spots win in straight sets by 6-2 scores or better. Leading the way was
Daley Rupar (Merril, Wis.) at No. 1 singles, whose 6-1, 6-1 win gave the Blazers a 5-0 lead and clinched the match.
Finn also won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, giving the Blazers their fourth win which allowed Rupar to close it out.
At No. 3 singles
Beth Richmond (Eau Claire, Wis.) opened with a 6-0 sweep in her first set before winning the match with a 6-2 second set, while at No. 6 singles
Jackie Koenig also had a 6-0 opening set on her way to a 6-0, 6-1 win. The Blazers ran all the way out to an 8-0 lead as a team before the Falcons took their lone win
For as much as they Blazers cruised in their first march, the drama ran high in the second.
This time, the Blazers had just a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with UW-Eau Claire quickly tying things up with a win to open singles play at the top spot.
Finn put the Blazers back on top, 3-2, with her 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, but again the Bluegolds came back to tie it at 3-3 with a three-set win at No. 3 singles.
With the match knotted up, Hoffman broke the tie in Blazers favor again with her 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles.
Then, after dropping the first set 6-2 at No. 6 singles, Richmond came back with a 6-4 win in the second set to force a third. There, she quickly raced out to a 4-2 lead, only to see it slip away as they match went to a tiebreak. She regrouped yet again though, winning the tie-break 7-5 to take the third set 7-6 and clinch the win for the Blazers.
Erin Stocker (St. Cloud, Minn.) then added some insurance for the Blazers with a three-set win of her own at No. 5 singles
The Blazers are now off until returning to action Sept. 28 for three matches against Macalester, Minnesota State and Mount Mary.
