St. Joseph, Minn. – The Saint Benedict tennis team closed the season in fine fashion today (Apr. 28), taking a last-minute 5-4 in win over Saint Mary's on a beautiful Sunday at the CSB Outdoor courts.

With the team score tied 4-4 heading into the final match of the day, the Blazers (10-8, 4-6 MIAC) had it all come down to Aly Dahlquist at No. 6 singles.

Dahlquist has been a solid performer all season, ranking fourth on the team in wins. Today she earned possibly her biggest of the year though, scoring a 7-5, 6-3 decision for her ninth of the year, giving the Blazers a season ending 5-4 victory.

The dramatic win was set up at No. 5 singles, where the Cardinals (10-10, 2-8 MIAC) won a three-setter to pull the score to even as their Lexi Felten overcame a 6-4 loss in the first set to win 7-6 (7-5), 10-7 over Rachel Raden to push the final decision to six-singles.

The two teams split singles play on the day, with Daley Rupar earning her second career win at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 decision, while Beth Richmond win  6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.  Richmond improved to 7-2 at No. 4 with the win, the best winning percentage at a single position on the team for anyone with at least nine starts.

The Blazers set the table for the win by taking two of three doubles matches, starting with an 8-4 win by Rupar and Victoria Beach at No. 1. Doubles play was then book ended by an 8-5 win from Ellie Black and Richmond at No. 2.

The Blazers finished the season just on the outside looking in to the MIAC Tournament, ending the season seventh in the final standings with the top six advancing to the playoffs. Their 4-6 league record is just one game back from 5-5 Bethel in sixth place.

The future is certainly bright for the Blazers, though, as all six regular starters are scheduled to return in 2014.
