Back in Action: After their first loss in almost three weeks, the Saint Benedict tennis team is back in action on Apr. 19 to square off against St. Olaf. The match will be played at 5 p.m. at Fitness Evolution in Sartell, Minn. The Blazers look to respond to their 8-1 loss against the Tommies last Saturday with a big win against the Oles.
About St. Olaf: With a record of 7-5 and 4-1 in the MIAC, the Oles have had a pretty good season so far. In singles play, they have immense momentum as all but one player is coming into the match with a winning streak. The Oles as a whole are on a three-match winning streak with a 7-2 win against Oneonta State, a 9-0 sweep against Saint Mary's and a 6-3 win over Bethel.
Last Meeting: In their last match against the Oles, the Blazers suffered a very close loss by a score of 5-4. Like the meeting between the two teams the season before, the match was tied 4-4 and came down to the determining No. 3 singles position.
Sarah Rossman took the first set 6-3, but her opponent responded jumping ahead 5-0 in the next set and finished with the win. The two headed into a tiebreaker for the match where Rossman jumped ahead to an early 4-2 lead. With the score at 8-5, Rossman won three of the next four points, which put the score at 9-8. Rossman's opponent finished strong, though, and brought the final score to 10-8 for the win.
Storyline: After consecutive 5-4 losses in tight matches to the Oles, the Blazers are coming out looking for pay back and redemption from their loss last week to the Tommies. Winning seven of their last nine matches, the Blazers are also looking to continue a very strong run dating back over a month.
Who to Watch:
Daley Rupar currently leads the Blazers with an overall record of 10-3 and a 4-2 record in MIAC play.
Ellie Black has also greatly aided her team with an overall record of 9-3.
Jamie Hoffman will also be a tough opponent for the Oles at No. 1 singles with a 6-5 record. Hoffman and Rupar currently lead the Blazers in doubles play with a record of 7-3 in the top spot. The team of
Victoria Beach and
Ellie Black are currently right behind with a 7-2 record at No. 2 singles.
Last Time Out: The Blazers faced off against the unbeaten and league leader, St. Thomas last Saturday (Apr. 13). The Tommies walked away with an 8-1 win as Blazer's
Daley Rupar took the team's only win and her 10th win of the season. The Tommies swept through doubles play including a comeback win against the team of Rupar and Black who led 7-4 before the Tommie comeback.
Up Next: The Blazers will be moving on to play Carlton the on Apr. 21, with the match
moved back a day from its original Apr. 20 date. They will now serve it up at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, Minn. with a 3:30 p.m. start.
