Sartell, Minn. – The Saint Benedict tennis team got back on track today (Mar. 9), scoring a perfect 9-0 sweep over visiting Macalester in MIAC action.
Playing their final home match of the first half of the year, the Blazers wrapped up the indoor campaign in style with their third sweep of the young season. All three of the Blazers' (3-2, 1-2 MIAC) wins this year have come by 9-0 sweeps, while they also break out of a two-game losing skid to open MIAC play.
The final score doesn't tell the whole story, though, as Macalester (1-5, 0-3 MIAC) made the Blazers work for each of their nine wins on the day. Two singles matches went to a third set, with four sets going to a seventh point, as well as one doubles match that went to a ninth point.
One of those long matches came at No. 4 singles, where
Beth Richmond had to use a seventh point in the second to close out a 6-3, 7-5 win. The victory carried extra importance as well, as it moved the team score to 5-0 clinching the win for the Blazers.
The win was the second straight for Richmond, and her fourth on the year in singles play, tying her for the team lead.
Also getting her fourth win on the season was
Ellie Black at No. 5 singles, as she came back from a 6-7 loss in the first set to win the match in three with 6-3 and 10-2 decisions in the second and third. Black also stays unbeaten at No. 5 singles, standing 4-0 in the year. Additionally, her win today sealed the match sweep she closed out the 9-0 win.
Black also teamed up with
Victoria Beach at second doubles for a hard earned 9-7 win, as the two capped off a perfect 3-0 run for the Blazers through doubles play.
At the top of the line-up,
Jamie Hoffman battled for a 7-6 win in the first set, taking the tiebreaker 7-5 before completing the win with a 6-4 win in the second.
The Blazers now hit the road for one final match before spring break, heading to Concordia for a 5 p.m. date on Mar. 16. Then it's on to the sun the following week as they head to Hilton Head Island for the annual spring break, where they'll play five matches.
