Winona, Minn. – The Saint Benedict hockey team started a two-game road trip tonight (Feb. 2) against Saint Mary's University in Winona and came away with a 4-0 loss.
The Blazers took the ice against a team in Saint Mary's that was similarly ranked among the MIAC teams looking to gain a few points. Considered by many to be a must-win situation, the Blazers went to Winona with confidence and excitement but was held scoreless in tonight's event.
The Cardinals started their scoring spree with a goal from Mackenzie Klimek at 10:16 into the first period. This was the only goal in the first period for the Cardinals, a period in which they were outshot 7-to-6. The Blazers took seven shots in the second and third period as well but continued being stonewalled by the Cardinal goaltender, Sarah Gustafson. Gustafson saved all 21 shots that came her way, earning her the shutout.
The second period proved to be difficult for the Blazers as they let two goals in and allowed nine shots. The first goal of the period came from Mary DeBartolo on an assist Breanna Peterson with 5:13 left. The real dagger, however, came with one second left in the second period on a power play goal from Klimek, assisted by Macki Fadness. This was the second by Klimek on the night and Fadness' first of two assists. The power play was set up by a tripping penalty against CSB's
Tara Frey with 14 seconds remaining in the period.
The final goal was on a power play shot from Hope Karban in the third period after
Siri Berg-Moberg was called for high-sticking. This was the second assist on the night by Fadness.
The Blazers ended the game being outshot by the home team, 24-20 and lost in the faceoff department, 32-21.
Kaitlyn Rolando, the goalie for the Blazers tonight, finished the night with 20 saves on 24 opportunities.
The Blazers next take the ice at 2 p.m. tomorrow, Feb 2nd, in Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary's again and even the series.
