On the Road Again: The Blazers will hit the road for the sixth time in the past seven games as they head out to St. Paul, Minn. tomorrow (Feb. 2) to take on the St. Catherine University Wildcats. St. Catherine comes into the game with a 1-15 MIAC record (2-17 overall), while the Blazers boast a 13-3 (15-4) tally this season in league play.
About St. Catherine: Winless in the MIAC last season, the Wildcats had a lot to look forward to this year after graduating only one player from last year's team. After going 1-1 in the Alverno Tournament in Milwaukee to begin the season, the Wildcats are just 1-16. Their only win came against Macalester on Jan 21, winning in overtime by a score of 84-82. At 0-8, they are winless this year at home, with all but one of those losses coming by double digits or more. Offensively they are scoring 49.3 points per game this year and giving up 68.8. Both are conference-worst marks.
Last Time: The Blazers last met the Wildcats on Jan. 5, the first game back after winter break for both teams. In that game the Blazers jumped out to a 31-20 halftime lead and never looked back, winning the game 65-52 in Claire Lynch Hall.
Brianna Barrett had 17 points and was the only Blazer to score in double digits. They also had 17 points off 24 Wildcat turnovers, the third-most turnovers for a Blazer opponent this year.
The Storyline: Can the Blazers take care of business and stretch their winning streak to eight games? The Blazers have played well against the conference's powerhouses during their recent hot streak, but sometimes it's the teams at the bottom of the standings that can do the most damage. The Wildcats are due to win at home and are likely hoping to catch the Blazers looking ahead to next week's rematch against league-leader Concordia.
Who to Watch:
Brianna Barrett scored 17 in the teams' first contest and is coming off a 20-point performance against Gustavus. She has scored in double digits 15 times this year and continues to lead the team in scoring with 13.8 points per game, also good for fifth in the MIAC.
Whitney Canton has had the hot hand during the team's seven-game win streak, scoring in double figures in all seven of those games and averaging 15.2 over that span. Perhaps the biggest key to the Blazers' success however, has been
Morgan Dale. Over the past 7 games she has averaged 10.8 rebounds per game, including three games where she roped in a whopping 16. She ranks fourth in the conference in rebounds during conference play with 7.8 rebounds per game.
Last Time Out: On Wednesday the Blazers traveled to Arden Hills, Minn. to play a conference game against the Bethel University Royals. The Blazers found themselves down 57-56 with slightly more than two minutes to go, but then went on an 11-to-0 run to win the game 67-57. Barrett led the team with a season-high 20 points.
Tish Alexander added another 11 points, seven assists, and five steals.
Whitney Canton had 11 points and 10 rebounds, making her the second Blazer to record a double-double this year.
