Two for the Road: After taking their first win of the season against Stevenson University last Saturday (Nov. 30), the Saint Benedict hockey team responded with another win the next day to improve their record to 2-5. The Blazers look ahead to their next matchup, which will be held at home on Friday (Dec. 6) against the 2-4 Auggies at 7:30 p.m. The team will then travel to Minneapolis the next night for a second game at 7 p.m. After two games this weekend, the Blazers will be off until January.
Â
About the Auggies: The Auggies are coming off their second win of the season with a 5-1 win over St. Catherine University after losing to the team 4-3 the day before. Besides this series tie, the Auggies have two losses to Bethel University and both a win and loss to Concordia University-Wisconsin. With an away record of 1-3, the Auggies will look to improve on the road while taking advantage of their home advantage on Saturday.
Â
Last meeting: Last year, the Blazers matched up against Augsburg in the beginning of their season and walked away with their third tie of the season and a 4-0 win. In the first game, the Auggies took an early 1-0 lead until
Alli O'Brien (Stillwater, Minn.) tied the game at the beginning of the third period. From here, the two teams battled hard and finished with a 1-1 tie. In the second game,
Megan Brettingen (Mora, Minn.) scored first to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead. O'Brien then extended the Blazer's lead to 2-0 with a second period goal.
Ally Nielsen (Alexandria, Minn.) and
Siri Berg-Moberg (St. Paul, Minn.) then each added another goal in the second period to give the team a 4-0 lead as the Blazers kept this lead until the end of the game.
Â
The Storyline: With both teams having only two wins on the season so far, they will each be coming out hard in these games looking to use their home rink advantage in both games. The Blazers will be looking to continue with their momentum of two consecutive wins to start the climb back up the MIAC rankings. The Auggies will also be looking to bring their season back to life with another win as they come to St. Cloud after a big 5-1 win.
Â
