St. Cloud, Minn. – The Saint Benedict hockey team rallied for three goals in the second period on their way to a 4-2 win over Stevenson on Nov. 30.

The win gives the Blazers (1-5-0) their first win over the season, snapping their five-game losing skid to open the year. The Mustangs (3-4-1) meanwhile fall below the .500 mark with their third straight loss.

The Blazers outshot the Mustangs in each period, including a 9-to-6 edge in a fast-paced first, but still found themselves trialing 1-0 before a second period flurry saw the Blazers turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 edge. They got goals from three different players in the session, with Stephanie Kirk (Wayzata, Minn.), Alli O'Brien (Stillwater, Minn.) and Maddie Rainey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) all getting on the board.

Kirk started the scoring with her team best fifth of the season, tying the game just three minutes in. Taking over a loose puck from the other end, she led the charge up the ice and beat the goaltender from dead center in front.

O'Brien and Rainey added to the scoring party, each with their first of the year. O'Brien took a centering pass and gave the Blazers' their first lead since early in the first period against St. Olaf back on Nov. 16.

Then, with under three minutes left, Rainey notched her first point as a Blazer, also scoring from right in front. Rainey's goal came at the end of a 4-on-3 power play, the first of two goals with the advantage on the night.

Kirk would add another right away in the third, extending the Blazers' lead to 4-1, all but locking up the win.

The Mustangs added a second with just over three minutes to go in the game, and pulled their goalie over the final minute-plus, but the Blazer defense was up to the task, allowing just four shots in the entire third period. Goaltender Jenna Traut (St. Cloud, Minn.) finished with 17 saves in collecting the win, while her teammates on the offensive end put up 38 shots on the night, their second highest tally of the season.

The Blazers will be back in action to close out the series tomorrow (Dec. 1), hosting the Mustangs again at 2 p.m. at the MAC.
