St. Cloud, Minn. – The Saint Benedict hockey team made it a sweep today (Dec. 1), with its 8-4 win over Stevenson to close out the weekend.
Seven different players scored for the Blazers, who improve to 2-5-0 on the season. Five goals came in the third, blowing open a game that sat tied at 3-3 heading into the period. The Blazers and Mustangs (3-5-1) were even through the first 40 minutes, also tied 2-2 after the first.
The third period told the story with five different players scoring the five goals.
Christine Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) got the eventual game winner with her second of the day – the only Blazer with two in the game. She put the Blazers up 5-3 midway through the period, but the lead lasted just three minutes as the Mustangs came right back and got back within one with just over five to go.
From there, though, the Blazers poured it on with three goals in the final four minutes.
Kacee Medved (Littleton, Colo.),
Tara Frey (River Falls, Wis.) and Alison Kirk (Minnetonka, Minn.) all scored their first goals of the season, turning a once-close game into a blowout.
The eight goals scored is the most in the Jen Kranz-era and the most since the Blazers hung 10 on Concordia-Moorhead in a 10-1 win back on Nov. 20, 2005.
The teams traded four goals in the first, before swapping another two in the second to head to the final period knotted up at 3-3.
Brodersen picked the perfect time to drive home her first of the season, sending a slapshot from just inside the blueline between the right post and the goalies glove. The goal came with six minutes left in the second and tied the game at 3-3 before the second intermission.
Megan Brettingen (Mora, Minn.) and
Elli Marvin (Shoreview, Minn.) each scored their second goals of the season in the first period to start the scoring.
After nearly 40 shots last night, the Blazers hit a season-high today, outshooting the Mustangs 48-to-19 for their most lopsided tally of the season.
The Blazers return to action on Friday (Dec. 6) resuming MIAC play when they host Augsburg at 7:30 p.m., back at the MAC. Then on Dec. 7 they travel to Minneapolis to close out the series with the Auggies, also capping the first half of the season. After Saturday, the Blazers all off until January.
