St. Joseph, Minn. -Â The College of Saint Benedict soccer team (12-2-1 overall, 7-2-0 MIAC) ended nonconference play unbeaten with a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds today (Oct. 27) at Blazer Field.
With the win, this season already marks the second highest win total in head coach
Steve Kimbles five seasons, just one shy of the team's 13 in 2011.Â
Saint Benedict was relentless on the attack, racking up 14 shots and forcing nine corner kicks. The lone goal of the game came on a Blazer corner kick by sophomore
Ellie Mullen (Portland, Ore.). Mullen's kick went straight in to the cluster of Blugold defenders, where it ricocheted off to the right side of the box where senior
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was waiting. Bouchard shot across the net through the group of defenders and beat the Blugold goalie low to give her Blazers a 1-0 lead. The goal was Bouchard's seventh of the season and tied a career high.
Both teams entered the second half firing on all cylinders as the intensity picked up, but were stymied by the opposing goaltenders for the remainder of the game. CSB's First-year goaltender Heather Kaluzniak (Plymouth, Minn.) made five saves to record her sixth shutout of the season. She leads the MIAC with a .882 save percentage and is tied for fourth in saves with 75. Kaluzniak is ranked second in the MIAC in shutouts, just one behind St. Thomas' Jenny Grahek.
Saint Benedict has put up impressive numbers this season in nonconference play, finishing 5-0-1. The Blazers outshot their nonconference opponents 94 to 87 and put up 14 goals.
The Blazers return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 in St. Paul, Minn. when they take on MIAC opponent St. Catherine.
