St. Paul, Minn. – The Saint Benedict soccer team ran out to a 3-0 lead on its way to a 3-1 win on the road over St. Catherine today (Oct. 30), moving back into first place in the conference standings.
Â
The win improves the Blazers' record to 13-2-1, and with an 8-2-0 mark in conference play for 24 points, secures a spot in the MIAC Tournament. Now the Blazers can set their sights on an outright MIAC title, something they can secure with at least a tie at Concordia on Saturday.
Â
The Blazers' last MIAC Championship came in 2011, when they shared the title with Carleton, while their last outright title came in 2003, when they went unbeaten trough the conference with a 9-0-2 record.
Â
The usual suspects of
Laura Kosch (Eden Prairie, Minn.),
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and
Aly Hoffman (Chaska, Minn.) all scored, putting the Blazers up 3-0 early in the second before the Wildcats (7-10-0, 2-8-0 MIAC) got one back to spoil the shutout bid.
Â
Kosch scored in just the game's fifth minute to quickly put the Blazers ahead, and with a lead they'd never lose. She was assisted by
Peggy Renier (Plymouth, Minn.) for her fourth goal of the season, while Renier notched her fifth assist, second on the team only behind Bouchard.
Â
The score stayed 1-0 through the break, but quickly after Bouchard knocked in her eighth of the season for the eventual game winner, and the 2-0 lead. With eight goals, she has now set career highs for single season goals, assists and points this year.
Â
Kosch added the assist on Bouchard's goal to up her season total to 11 points on the season, hitting double-digits for the first career time.
Â
Less than 10 minutes later, Hoffman added the insurance, this time with Bouchard adding the help for her 12th assist on the season, moving within two of tying the CSB career record at 32 in her career.
Â
The goal was Hoffman's seventh, one shy of her eight from last season.
Â
The Blazers have now won four straight and six of their last seven. They will now turn their attention to the season finale on Saturday (Nov. 2) in Moorhead. Kickoff with the Cobbers is set for 1 p.m.
