Moorhead, Minn. – The Saint Benedict basketball team hits the road for the first time in the second half of the season tonight (Jan. 9), heading to Concordia for a key midseason MIAC game, tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
The match-up will be a battle for third place in the conference standings, featuring two of the top teams in the league early in the conference season. With each team at 8-3 overall, the host Cobbers are a game better in conference action at 7-1, while the Blazers will enter at 6-2.
The Blazers have won five of their last six, and will put their season long three-game winning streak on the line, while the Cobbers are winners of five straight. Concordia's lone MIAC loss came back in early December to then fourth-ranked St. Thomas, in a game where the Cobbers led for nearly the entire first half.
The Cobbers showed they could compete with the best in the game, and have responded with their five consecutive wins, posting double-digit victories four times. Their current streak is the third longest in the league, behind the Tommies 10-straight and Gustavus' eight.
Led by the league's third leading scorer Tricia Sorensen, the Cobbers boast the top scoring offense in the MIAC at 68.7 points per game. They have topped the 60-point plateau in each of their last five games, while also going over the 70-point mark four times. During the same run, Sorensen has scored 12 or more points in each game, including 20 and 23 in the last two games respectively.
On just Monday, the Cobbers posted an impressive 81-68 win over Saint Mary's, one of the two teams to take a win from the Blazers. Looking at the Blazers, they have competed with every conference team they have played, leading both Gustavus and Saint Mary's in the final five minutes.
If holding a late lead, closing out the Cobbers will be key for the Blazers. But what seemed to be their Achilles heel early on, has been overcome – at least in the Blazers most recent games – as CSB held off a late Bethel rally on their way to the wins and put away a St. Kate's team that cut a double-digit lead to four in the second half.
The Cobbers took both games from the Blazers last season, and are currently riding a four-game winning streak against the Blazers. There is plenty to play for and plenty to be gained tonight, as Saint Benedict and Concordia square off.
