Soccer Falls in Second Half

The Blazer soccer team tied their match with UW-Stout late in the second half, but the Blue Devils scored in the final 10 minutes for the win.

Menomonie, Wis. - The Saint Benedict soccer team lost for the first time this season, dropping a 2-1 decision on the road today (Sept. 9) to host Wisconsin-Stout.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half, with the Blue Devils (2-2-0) fending off all six Blazer (1-1-1) shots, including turning away all three that landed on goal. The CSB defense was stiff in the first half, allowing just one shot while goalkeeper Megan Favorite  saw nothing get past the backline to reach her.

The Blazer offense continued to out-shoot the Blue Devils in the second half, but it was the hosts who capitalized on their few opportunities. On just their second shot of the half – and second shot on goal of the entire match – UW-Stout had the lead, breaking the scoreless tie less than 10 minutes into the half.

Alix Hyduke scored unassisted for the Blue Devils, her first goal of the season.

Relentless, the Blazers continued to attack, eventually earning a key corner kick in the 70th minute. After bringing the offense down for the corner, less than two minutes later they had the score that tied the game.

Natalie Kruse evened the score with the first goal of her career, using an assist from Alli O'Brien to do so.

With less than 20 minutes left and the score tied, the Blazers seemed to have the momentum. Despite another corner and a ball off the post in the final 10 minutes, the Blazers were unable to take their first lead of the night. The next time down the field, however, the Blue Devils did.

Hyduke scored her second of the game at the 84:25 mark, knocking in the eventual game-winner, unassisted.

The Blazers lose for the first time on the young season, after winning and tying in their first two games. They will look to get back in the win column as the open MIAC play at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 on the road at Macalester.
