Minneapolis – The Saint Benedict soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in overtime today (Sept. 26), falling 2-1 host Augsburg.

The Auggies broke the deadlock with just over five minutes left to play in the second extra session when Marie Fitzgerald finished off just the second shot of the period.

Blazer goalkeeper Megan Favorite already had eight saves in the match but the final header was too well placed for Favorite to get her ninth.

The win improves Augsburg to 7-3-0 in the season, while the Blazers fall to .500 at 3-3-2. Both teams now sit among a mix in the middle of the conference standings at 2-2-0.

The Auggies had the only two shots of the second overtime, and outshot the Blazers 7-to-1 in both overtimes combined. All of that came after the Blazers held the slight edge in regulation, 15-to-14. When it came to corners, CSB also was in charge, by a 5-to-0 margin.

Neither team scored in the first half, despite a barrage of shots as each team put up eight in the period. Then in the second the Auggies struck first, just over 10 minutes in, as Olivia Muyres placed the ball just over Favorite for the game's first score at the 55:36 mark.

With less than 20 minutes left to play, the Blazers evened things up, with Laura Kosh netting her first goal of the season. At the 72:23 mark she finished off a pass from team-assist-leader Colleen Bouchard to get the Blazers on the board.

The Auggies had a couple chances late to earn the win in regulation, but Favorite came up with big with the saves to force the extra session.

With the loss, the Blazers drop their second straight for the first time this season, and the first time since mid-September last season.

They return to action at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, when they host St. Olaf on Homecoming.
