Soccer Suffers Loss to Oles

The Blazer soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to MIAC opponent St. Olaf

St. Joseph, Minn. –  The Saint Benedict Blazers dropped another close match on homecoming today at the hands of the St. Olaf Oles in overtime. The loss is the third straight for the Blazers, and brings their record to 3-3-2 (2-3 MIAC).  The win for the Oles snaps their three game winless streak and improves their record to 5-4-1 (3-2 MIAC) for the year.

Despite the loss, there was no lack of scoring opportunities for the Blazers, as they outshot the Oles 22-12 in the match, and 15-2 in the second half.

With the game still tied at zero mid-way through the first half, junior forward Colleen Bouchard received the ball at the top of the box and dribbled it in to the right side, splitting two defenders on the play and creating a one-on-one opportunity between her and Ole junior keeper, Nora Forbes. She appeared to be tripped up by one of the defenders before she was able to get a shot off, but, much to the fans dismay, there was no foul called on the play.

Ten minutes later first-year forward Nicole Bauer took a shot inside the box that was headed for the back of the net until one of Bauer's teammates fell on top of the ball, stopping the shot from becoming a goal.

The game remained scoreless until, with little less than three minutes to play in the first half, the Oles were able to capitalize on an opportunity of their own, a beautifully placed corner kick by senior Annie Manning that was headed by first-year Emily Sierakowski, just off the fingertips of Blazer sophomore keeper Claire O'brien and into the goal, giving the Oles a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

After Head Coach Steve Kimble' halftime speech, the Blazers came out firing on all cylinders, seemingly able to do whatever they wanted with the ball, except for put it inside the goal.

Early in the half, sophomore forward Alli O'Brien dribbled the ball into the box where a foul was called on an Ole defender, awarding a penalty kick to the Blazers. Bouchard took the penalty shot for the Blazers, striking the ball brilliantly into the upper righthand corner of the net, giving Forbes no chance to make a save. “I tried not to think too much about being down, but went in with confidence and picked my spot and just hit it like I usually do in practice,” said Bouchard.  The goal was Bouchard's first of the year, after scoring six last year, and being named the MIAC's Most Valuable Player.

The rest of the second half was made up of an outpouring of shots and great scoring opportunities for the Blazers, but Forbes came up big for the Oles, stopping eight Blazer shots in the second half, and forcing the game to overtime.

Going into the overtime period the Blazers had all the momentum, and for the first few minutes it appeared as it was only a matter of time before they would finally capitalize on one of their numerous scoring chances and end the game in a win.

Unfortunately for the Blazers, luck was not on their side. After having no corner kicks in the second half, the Oles came up with one early in the first overtime period. Manning fired the ball into the box, where it bounced off several players and, in the confusion, Kajsa Brindley booted the ball into the net, ending the match in a 2-1 loss for Saint Benedict.

“We came out in the second half and played very well, but St. Olaf's is a really good team so it was a hard battle, we were just unlucky not to come away with a win,” said Bouchard.

The Blazers will play their next 4 games at home, as they try to snap their three game losing streak. Their first chance will be next wednesday (Oct. 3) at 4 p.m, at home against St. Thomas.
