Indianola, Iowa – The Saint Benedict volleyball team was crowned Simpson Invitational Tournament Champions today (Sept. 15), capping off a perfect weekend with two more wins, 3-1 over Nebraska Wesleyan and 3-0 over Grinnell.
The Blazers won 25-23, 25-13, 20-25 & 25-19 over Nebraska Wesleyan and 25-22, 25-10 & 25-20 over Grinnell, running their current winning streak to a season-long five straight matches.
With a perfect 4-0 mark on the weekend and as the only team to make it out of the tournament unbeaten, the Blazers earned the distinction of Simpson Invite Champions. Gaining All-Tournament Team nods were
Sophie Stangl and
Taya Kockelman, as the pair paced the Blazer offense all weekend long.
Stangl continued the best weekend of her career with a new career high 16 kills in the match against Nebraska Wesleyan, before breaking it just a match later with 17 against Grinnell. She has now topped double-digit kills in seven consecutive matches, the longest current stretch on the team.
Kockelman dished out 77 assists on the day, including a career high 52 in the first match of the day against Nebraska Wesleyan. The third 50-assist game of her season, she has now gone over the 500-mark for the season.
Not to be outdone however, was
Lexi Alm, who hit the 20-mark for the third time this season, tying a career best she set in the first weekend of the year.
The Blazers dropped a mere two sets all weekend while jumping out to 2-0 leads in each of their four matches.
They will now take their five-match winning streak back home as they return to conference play on at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 to host Hamline.
