Friday the 13th Brings No Bad Luck for Blazers

04/14/2012

RESULTS

Friday the 13th definitely didn't keep the Blazers from defeating the Concordia Cobbers at Gold's Gym in Sartell, Minn. The Blazers used their solid doubles teams and consistent singles play to win by a score of 7-2.

The Blazers jumped to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Alyson Brandell (Elk River, MN, Elk River)l and Sarah Rossman (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) played one of their best matches of the year with an 8-6 victory. The match was played at a competitive level by both teams. With the score 7-6, Brandell was able to hold serve to close out the win. MacKenzie Rayman (Burnsville, MN, Apple Valley) and Taylor Reiner (Darwin, MN, Hutchinson) picked up the doubles win with an impressive performance as their first time playing together as a doubles team.

In singles, Alicia Vargas (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids)picked up the third point with a solid 3 and 3 win. She controlled the points with strong groundstrokes and great athleticism to capture the win. Taylor Reiner picked up the fourth point for the Blazers with a straight set win. This was Reiner's third conference match in a row and her third singles win. She held off a rally attempt by her opponent in the second set to close out the match. Senior Lauren Jones (Ogden, UT, Saint Joseph Catholic) picked up the deciding point with a rallying victory. With her parents in the stands from Texas and playing with a pulled muscle in her back, she battled back after dropping the first set 6-3. She gained some momentum throughout the second set by settling in and playing consistently strong tennis, forcing her opponent to move all over the court. The two players traded points all the way to 9-9 in the deciding tie-break before Jones broke serve and held serve to finish off the match. Rounding out the singles play was a win from Sarah Rossman at 3 singles and another near perfect match for Megan Seipel (New London, MN, New London-Spicer) at 4 singles, only dropping a single game.

The Blazers will a host a non-conference match on Wednesday April 17th at 4 p.m. against the University of Minnesota Morris.
