Blazer Tennis Falls Just Short Against St. Olaf

04/01/2012

The Blazer tennis team had another well-fought match against St. Olaf at the Owatonna Tennis Center on Friday Mar. 30th. Despite their efforts, the Blazers came up just short finishing the match with a score of 4-5.

Like last season's match, the score was tied 4-4 and it came down to the number one singles position. This year the determining position was left up to the number three singles position. Sarah Rossman (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) battled head to head with her opponent, winning the first set 6-3. In the second set her opponent played flawlessly, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before Rossman held serve to break the run. The set ended the following game but gave her the much needed momentum to begin the tie-break. With all the other matches complete, the two players began the tie-break for the match. Rossman jumped to an early 4-2 lead, only to see her opponent battle back into the match. With the score 5-8, Sarah began her own comeback. She won 3 out of the next 4 points, bringing the score to 8-9. After a long rally, Sarah's backhand slice found the tape of the net and fell harmlessly on her own side, bringing the final score to 8-10.

Doubles had another strong performance for the second straight match, giving the Blazers a 2-1 lead to begin the match. Alyson Brandell (Elk River, MN, Elk River)l and Sarah Rossman were down 6-1 in their match before mounting a fierce comeback to get all the way back to 6-7 before falling just short of a win, losing 8-10.

Megan Seipel (New London, MN, New London-Spicer) and Alicia Vargas (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids)continue to play at a high level, picking up the lone singles wins with convincing fashion.

The Blazers will play their next match on Monday April 2nd at Bethel University in St. Paul at 4 p.m.
