On Friday, the team made the short trip to Gold's Gym in Sartell, MN to begin their first match of the season which took place at 4 p.m. The final match score was 7-2, giving the Blazers an overall record of 1-0.
The Blazer singles players proved to be very strong with wins coming from more than half of the six singles matches. A standout win came from
Alicia Vargas, first year, finishing her match at four singles with two 6-1 sets. In addition,
Cheyenne Raforth, first year, also had an outstanding performance at five singles, wrapping up her match with a 6-1, 6-2 finish.
At one singles, senior
Lauren Jones battled head to head with her opponent, going into a 3rd set. Moorhead came out with a win of 3-1 (
6-3, 2-6, 10-5).
Blazer doubles teams also proved to be successful. At two doubles, sophomore Jaime Hoffman and first year Alicia Vargas defeated Dragons' Kathryn Neubauer and Jenna Beth Galstad with a final score of 8-3. Also with a victory was three doubles, first years Elissa Husby and Cheyenne Raforth, the final score being 8-3 as well.
A strong match early in the season gives good reason to look to a successful 2012 outdoor season. The Blazers next match will take place on Sunday Feb. 26 at the Lifetime Fitness in Bloomington where they will take on a MIAC rival, Macalester College at 3:30 p.m.
