Victory Comes With a Last Minute Shot by Brodersen

BOX SCORE

The College of Saint Benedict (5-12-3 overall, 3-6-3 MIAC) hosted Saint Olaf College (6-10-4 overall, 6-5-2 MIAC) tonight at home. After defense dominated the first two periods, the final period produced three goals in a 2-1 victory for the Blazers.

The first two periods were scoreless, but by no means lacked an offensive push from either team. St. Olaf had fired off 36 shots that were all saved by first-year goaltender Jenna Traut and the Blazers got off 35 of their own. This intense offensive performance suppressed by incredible defense was building up to a climatic finish.

St. Olaf struck first with a goal just over three minutes into the first period. Without a flash of doubt, the Blazers answered. After a tough shot to handle was delivered by junior defender Catherine Pollock, first-year forward Alli O'Brien overhanded the rebound into the net for a Blazer game tying goal. The minutes wound down and the shots kept coming as each goaltender kept up a remarkable performance. However, with only two and a half minutes left, sophomore forward Allyson Nielsen hooked up sophomore defender Christine Brodersen for a game winning power play goal.

Jenna Traut ended the night with an incredible 50 saved shots on goal, improving her save count to 370 total shots saved this season.

This win gives head coach Jennifer Kranz more victories in her first year with the team than they experienced in their previous season.

The Blazers' next game will be in Northfield, MN for a second match up against the Oles. It will take place tomorrow, February 11 at 2 o'clock p.m.
