ST. CLOUD -  The College of Saint Benedict hockey team had a hard fought battle against the Wildcats of St. Catherine's University but eventually fell, 4-2. The opening period displayed the offensive firepower of both teams as they traded goals for a 2-2 score after one. The Blazers piled up a game-leading 12 first period shots to the four shot by St. Kate's, but the firepower stopped there. Alex Hall, who had 27 saves for the Wildcats, kept the Blazers in check the rest of the game.

The Wildcats struck first with a powerplay shot from Bailey Rasmussen which was assisted by Annie Buttermore 4:11 into the game. The Blazers, who won yesterday's matchup with the Wildcats 3-0, came back quickly though with an Ashley Olson goal just a minute later.

There were five total penalties called on the Blazers, all of which occurred in the first two periods. The third period, however, was when the penalty bug caught the Wildcats. All five of the Wildcat penalties occurred in the final period, including two within the last two minutes. With an empty net, the Blazers took on the Wildcats with twice as many players (6-on-3) for the final 1:30 but failed to get any shots off, ending the game 4-2.

"We know that we can compete with any team in the MIAC, we just need to play our best for both games and prove to other teams that we can do it," said senior Alex Carlson. The Blazers have proven that with quality wins over Augsburg and St. Kate's, as well as ties with St. Olaf and Concordia.

The Blazers don't have another game for over a month because of the holiday break and look to take that time to continue progressing as a team, as well as take time to rest bodies. "We really need to work on the little things as a team. We are so close, but we just need to take this time to fix those little things then we will be where we want to be."

After a month off, the Blazers will return to action at 4 p.m. on January 5, at the Municipal Athletic Complex to take on Robert Morris University of Illinois.
