Thirty-four combined wins without a loss have racked up since Sept. 22 when the two teams last met, but only one can win when they meet tonight (Nov. 3) at 7 p.m.
The volleyball teams of Saint Benedict and St. Thomas have been on a collision course for a rematch since they last met during the regular season. In this evening's MIAC Volleyball Tournament Championship Match, the Blazers (27-4) enter riding a 15-match winning streak, with their only loss over the last 22-matches coming at the hands of UST.
The Tommies (33-1), meanwhile, have lost just once all season, suffering a 3-2 setback to sixth-ranked Emory on Sept. 7 They enter on a 28-match winning streak, which included a perfect 11-0 run through the conference season.
It will be a top-25 match-up at Schoenecker Arena too, as the Blazers carry their No. 23 national ranking, up two spots from No. 25 where they reentered two weeks ago. The Tommies enter as the No. 7 team in the country, entrenched in the spot for a majority of the season as part of a largely unchanged top-10.
Each team has been mostly untested during their run as well. The Blazers won 15 straight sets after the loss to the Tommies, and after pulling out a five-set win over then No. 19 UW-Stevens Point, proceeded to win another 17 consecutive sets. That match against the Pointers was the only ranked team the Blazers faced during the stretch, while taking care of the rest of their opponents in four-sets or less.
The competition stepped up over the final two weeks, taking on top regional opponents St. Scholastica, Carleton, Bethel and Concordia respectively. The Blazers swept the four matches, dropping just two total sets.
Since suffering their only loss, the Tommies have posted 17 sweeps, and dropped just three total sets in MIAC play. The survived a five-set-scare in the semifinals, coming back against Carleton to keep the streak alive.
Against the best teams on their schedule, they have been up to the challenge. Even in their loss to Emory, they took the No. 6 team in the country to five-sets. They swept regional power Northwestern, as well as WIAC power UW-Stevens Point, and held off No. 11 Warburg 3-2.
The Tommies lead the MIAC in kills, while the Blazers lead in digs. UST boasts the MIAC Player of the Year in Kelly Foley while the Blazers' own the MIAC leaders in kills per set (
Lexi Alm), digs per set (
Victoria Nass) and assists per set (
Taya Kockelman).
They've shadowed each other all season long, matching win-for-win since they last met. The MIAC's best two teams meet again tonight in the MIAC Tournament Championship game, with a berth in the NCAA Tournament on the line.
