Minneapolis, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team played to a 1-1 tie tonight (Nov. 16) against conference opponent Augsburg College, and earned its first point in MIAC play.
Saint Benedict (1-2-3, 0-2-1 MIAC) trailed early, being outshot 9-5 in the first period. Augsburg (1-5-1, 0-2-1 MIAC) scored just five minutes into the first on a goal by Rachel Hennessy with the assist going to Claire Cripps. The goal was Hennessy's first of the season.
The Blazer offense came alive in the second, putting 16 shots on goal. Less than two minutes into the period the Blazers went on a man advantage due to an interference penalty by Augsburg's Jeanna Dudley. Saint Benedict was unable to even the score despite putting seven shots on the frame.
After two periods of play, the Blazers trailed by one even though they were outshooting the Auggies 21-18.
Saint Benedict hit the ice running to start the third period, evening the score less than one minute in. Sophomore
Alli O'Brien scored the lone goal for Saint Benedict, unassisted. The goal was her first of the season.
With the score tied at 1-1 the teams headed to a sudden death overtime period. The Blazers needed to play strong defense with their first conference point on the line. Saint Benedict started the period a player down due to a hooking penalty by
Mara Kohl in the last minute of the third period. The Blazers played strong offense, putting eight shots on goal, but were unable to sneak another one past the Augsburg goalie.
Picking up the tie in net for Saint Benedict was sophomore
Jenna Traut. Traut stopped 29-of-30 shots in her second start of the season. The Blazers outshot their opponent 41-30 but Augsburg controlled the faceoff circles winning 43 of the 65 total match ups.
Saint Benedict returns to action at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 17) when they host Augsburg at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex.
