So We Meet Again: For the second time in just over a week, Saint Benedict matches up with Concordia. The No. 2 seed Blazers host the No. 3 seed Cobbers in the semifinals of the MIAC Tournament tonight (Nov. 1), with the winner moving on the Championship Game on Saturday.
About Concordia: The defending MIAC Tournament Champion, beating St. Thomas in the finals last season. The Cobbers also knocked the Blazers out of the tourney last season in the semifinals. It has been an up and down season for the Cobbers, struggling through a 2-6 stretch to start the season, only to turn it around in MIAC play to go 7-4 and finish third. They advanced to the semifinals, with a 3-0 sweep over Bethel Tuesday night in the quarterfinals. The Cobbers are still a fringe NCAA Tournament team, ranked seventh in the last regional poll, but a win tonight goes a long was to helping their resume.
Last Time Out: The Blazers had the fortune of taking Tuesday night off, and were able to watch from home, as most of the tournament field opened play. When they last were on the court, they squared off against the Cobbers, taking a 3-1 win on the road in Moorhead, to cap a 10-1 MIAC season and 14-match winning streak to end the year.
Top-25: The Blazers moved up two spots in the national rankings this week, checking in at No. 23. After reentering the poll at No. 25 last week, the move up comes after closing the regular season with wins over two of the top teams in the region in Bethel and Concordia.
Player of the Week:
Victoria Nass made it three consecutive MIAC Players of the Week for the Blazers, earning Setter/Libero of the Week honors. The MIAC digs leader as a libero, she topped the 30-dig mark in each match last week.
MIAC Tournament: The Blazers have advanced to the MIAC Tournament in each of
Nicole Hess' three seasons at the helm, and are in the semifinals for the second straight season. A win tonight would mark the Blazers first appearance in the title game since 2009, also the last year they won the tournament.
Selection Monday: A MIAC Tournament title means an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while a loss means the Blazers will be looking for an at-large bid. Whether the Blazers will be waiting to see if the get in, or where they will be going in the first round, you can see it all first at 10 a.m., Nov. 5 on the NCAA Selection show, live on NCAA.com.
