Today (Oct. 3) the St. Thomas Tommies will travel to St. Joseph, Minn. to take on the Blazers of Saint Benedict in a key Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) soccer match. Both teams are coming off of multiple-game losing streaks and will be looking to get back on track with a win. Last Time Out:
On Saturday the Blazers dropped their third straight match at home against the St. Olaf Oles in overtime. Despite the loss, it was a match they clearly dominated, especially late, outshooting the Oles 15-2 in the second half. After getting down 1-0 in the first half, the Blazers came out roaring in the second half, outshooting the Oles 15-2 in that period. Not long into the second half forward Alli O'Brien was fouled in the box, setting up the opportunity that allowed teammate Bouchard to notch her first goal of the year off the ensuing penalty kick. Early in overtime the Oles were able to sneak away with a header from first-year Kajsa Brindley off a corner kick by senior Annie Manning.

About the Tommies:
Tommie Head Coach Sheila McGill's sixth season has produced mixed results. Their season thus far has been a roller-coaster of sorts. The highs include a 6-0 trouncing of St. Mary's and 2-0 win on the road against St. Catherine. The lows include a 1-5 record in games decided by one goal. The Tommies are only one game out of first place in the MIAC, but coming into today's game the Tommies have lost two in a row. They hope a win against the Blazers can put them back in contention for the conference crown.

The Matchup:
Despite their low goal production of late, the Blazers still have one of the best offenses in the conference, featuring two electrifying forwards and a whole host of quality midfielders that are likely to be rotated in by Head Coach Steve Kimble. If they are able to maintain the momentum and energy they built in the second half of the St. Olaf game, the shots should begin to fall and scoring goals will be no problem. That task, however, will prove to be easier said than done against the stingy St. Thomas defense which leads the conference in goals conceded (six) through nine games.
