Coming off yet another stellar sweep – most recently against St. Scholastica – the Saint Benedict volleyball team gears up for their four consecutive MIAC games to finish the season. The beginning of these games starts at 7 p.m., Oct. 19 at Carleton College and at 3 p.m., Oct. 20 at Gustavus.
“All four of the teams we play are really good. Gustavus' record doesn't really show how good they really are,” said Head Coach
Nicole Hess. “The key for us is to finish strong and really take care of what we need to do and don't get too wrapped up in the whole playoff situation or what's going to happen after that, take care of business, take care of ourselves and just practice hard. The same things we've been talking about all year long.”
The Blazers definitely have the momentum on their side going into these next four games with a 22-4 record overall and a 6-1 mark in the MIAC. They have a 10-game winning streak going and have won 16 of their last 17 games with 12 sweeps during the run. They are also coming off a very successful, four win tournament in the UW-Stout Invite.
“Our team has been very focused on our goals all along. Right from day one in practice we've been focusing on taking the season one game at a time so we've never thought too far ahead or worried about what just happened. We just take care of whoever our next opponent is,” said Hess.
Beyond the team's success as a whole, the Blazers have been recognized individually as well. Alexa Rinde is the reigning MIAC Hitter of the Week, while
Lexi Alm and
Sophie Stangl have also earned MIAC weekly honors during the season.
“Those three definitely deserve the accolades that they got and are receiving but without the rest of the team, they know none of that would be possible,” said Coach Hess. “Those awards really reflect what's been going on in our gym all year,”
Among the league stat leaders, Alm currently leads the MIAC in kills as well as kills per set,
Victoria Nass is second in digs per set and
Taya Kockelman also leads the MIAC in assists per set. The team as a whole also currently leads the MIAC in digs and in second in both assists and kills.
“We have 18 very competitive players on our team and our practices have really been intense and focused. When you have a situation like that, good things happen,” Hess added.
The Blazers are currently second in the MIAC, right behind St. Thomas in first. If the Blazers finish off the season continuing their incredible streak, it will definitley help as they go into the playoffs. The momentum, on top of the team's great skill will give them a definite advantage as they potentially face off against the Tommies later on in the playoffs.
