Blazers Soccer Opens Season with 3-2 Win Over Christopher Newport University

Results

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (1-0 overall, 0-0 MIAC) defeated Christopher Newport University in an exciting fashion, as the Blazers scored a goal in the final minute to win 3-2.

The first half of the game started as a defensive battle as neither team scored and each only had one shot on goal. The second half began strong for the Blazers as sophomore Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier) slipped one past the Newport goalkeeper just  six minutes in giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, junior Jess Pellegrene (Maple Grove, MN, Totino-Grace) gave the Blazers a 2-0 lead in the 74th minute off an assist from senior Olivia Wee (Savage, MN, Juan Diego), but the game was not over yet.

Christopher Newport was not backing down, and they continued to play a very hard game. Three minutes after the Pellegrene goal, Christopher Newport junior Dani Gunderson sank a free kick from outside the box to make the score 2-1 Blazers. With just 56 seconds remaining Christopher Newport netted another goal on a 15 yard strike to make it 2-2. Late game heroics shortly followed, as junior forward Paige Olson (Plymouth, MN, West Lutheran) scored with 49 remaining in the game to seal the 3-2 win for the Blazers.

The Blazers (1-0) will take on Virginia Wesleyan College at 3 pm today, in a non-conference match-up.
