Blazers Fall In Double Overtime to Macalester 1-0

Results

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (1-4 overall, 0-1 MIAC) fell to Macalester College (4-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) in double overtime today in St. Joseph, Minnesota. The Scots scored with 4:06 remaining in the second overtime to seal the victory.

The game started out very strong for the Blazers who had three shots in the first five minutes of the game. The Blazers slowed down a bit on offense throughout the remainder of the first half, only putting one more shot on goal. The Scots from Macalester had two shots in the first half both of which were saved by Megan Favorite (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove).

The second half started out as a defensive battle as both teams could not muster a shot. Shortly into the half Paige Olson (Plymouth, MN, West Lutheran)laced one from around 15 yards out, but Scots goalkeeper Rosie Glenn-Finer made a spectacular save robbing Olson from the Blazers first goal. The Blazers made one final push in the game's final minutes but only one shot on goal was attempted.

Macalester started out with the ball in the first overtime, having the ball in the Blazer's zone most of the 10 minutes, but with the great defense of the Blazers the Scots only attempted one shot on goal which was saved by Megan Favorite. Favorite ended with six saves in the contest.

The momentum was in the favor of the Scots to start the second overtime as the Blazers controlled the ball. The Blazers pushed it right down the field into the Scot's zone, but strong defense stopped the attack. The Scots then rushed the ball down the field into the Blazer zone where a corner kick was to be attempted. Scot's Izzi Speer kicked one perfectly right in front of the net to teammate Maggie Molter. The header was blocked by a defending Blazer right in front of the goal, but the rebound bounced right back to Scot's Emily Humphrey who booted one into the net with 4:06 remaining to end the contest 1-0.

The Blazers will host nationally ranked Carleton College this Saturday at 1 pm in Saint Joseph, Minnesota.
