Another Overtime Game Results in a Tough Loss for Blazer Ice Hockey

The Blazers (3-5-2 overall, 1-3-2 MIAC) traveled to St. Paul to take on the Wildcats of St. Catherine University (5-1-2 overall, 3-1-2 MIAC) after a 3-3 tie at home the previous night.

Once again, the scoring went back and forth between the two teams in this game. St. Kate's scored in the first period to take an early lead, but first-year Megan Brettingen assisted senior Brenna Gould to score only five minutes later. This evened things up and sent the game into the second period tied 1-1.

Senior Rachel Welz scored an unassisted goal as soon as the second period began to put the Blazers up 2-1, but another St. Kate's goal by Cassie Rooney tied the game at two. An upsetting series of penalties against the Blazers gave the Wildcats huge scoring opportunities to try and take the lead. Fortunately, Gould returned the favor by assisting Brettingen with a shorthanded goal to put the Blazers up 3-2 just as the second period was ending.

The entire third period was well fought and it was not until almost two minutes left in the game that St. Kate's scored the game tying goal.

With a small feeling of deja vu, the Blazers would head into overtime with the Wildcats once again to settle the score. Unfortunately, after a tripping penalty on Saint Ben's, Cassie Rooney scored the game winning goal on a power play to seal the W for St. Kate's.

Despite going 0-1-1 against the wildcats in the two game series, the Blazers played extremely well and showed much improvement from the previous games of the season. They will continue to make improvements on the ice as the year goes on and also continue to compete with the top teams in the MIAC as they did this weekend.

Their next game is against Augsburg College on December 10. It is at a neutral site in Delano, Minn. at 1:00 p.m.
