Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Last-second, overtime goal gives Saint Benedict Women's Soccer Playoff title

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- Top-seeded Saint Benedict and No. 3 Concordia engaged in a game to remember Saturday in the 2011 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Soccer Playoff championship. With just seconds remaining in overtime, Kerrie Dingmann scored the game's lone goal to give the Blazers a 1-0 win, and the conference's postseason crown.

Neither team managed a goal through the first 99-plus minutes in a game worthy of the title that was on the line. However, Colleen Bouchard hooked up with Dingmann for the game- and championship-winner with less than five seconds left on the clock to set off a celebration on CSB's home field in St. Joseph, Minn. The Blazers added the Playoff championship to their MIAC co-championship in the regular season, and with Saturday's win they've also earned the conference's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.

For the most part, the stats were as even as the result in Saturday's title game. Concordia - the defending playoff champion - held a slight 17-16 edge in shots, but Saint Benedict had a 12-8 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had two corner kicks and the Cobbers committed more fouls, 11-5.

Both goalies played well to highlight each team's defensive effort. Blazers' goalkeeper Megan Favorite made eight saves to earn the shutout victory, while Cobber keeper Ali Nelson made 11 saves with just the one goal allowed. Dingmann, Bouchard and Heather Beshears led CSB with three shots apiece, with Dingmann and Beshears getting three shots on goal, and Rochelle Hickerson led Concordia with a game-high four shots, including three shots on goal.

The one-goal margin of victory served as the perfect exclamation point to an exciting Playoff tournament in which each game was decided by one goal or less. Saint Benedict was tied 0-0 with No. 4 Macalester after double overtime in the semifinals, and the Blazers advanced with a 2-0 edge in the shootout. Meanwhile, Concordia scored the lone goal as it upset No. 2 Carleton in the other semifinal

With the win, Saint Benedict improved to 12-6-2 this season, while Concordia fell to 12-3-5 with the loss. Both teams will await the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament selection show, so the Blazers can learn their first-round fate of the national playoffs, and the Cobbers are hoping they'll receive an at-large bid to join the field as well. The selection show will be broadcast live online at NCAA.com Monday, Nov. 7, at 1:30 p.m.
