Blazer Soccer Comes Up Big In Shootout, Moves on to Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Results

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (12-6-3 overall) defeated Carroll University (11-8-2) 5-4 in a shootout today,  November, 12 during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Saint Ben's dominated the offensive side of the ball the entire game. They had 16 total shots compared to Carroll's two, but yet the Blazers were struggling to find the back of the net. The game continued in a deadlock as Carroll's goalkeeper Kate Maxwell kept the Blazers quiet.

As the game continued, the intensity picked up for both teams. They knew what was at stake, which was the opportunity to move onto the second round of the NCAA Tournament. As the clock wound down Saint Ben's had a few more scoring opportunities but shots missed wide and the game would be sent into overtime.

The Blazers have had the privilege of going to overtime quite a few times in the playoffs this season, and they know how to handle the pressure, which ended up giving them the slight advantage. Carroll did not even get a shot off in either overtime periods while the Blazers had eight, three of which were spectacular saves by Carroll's Kate Maxwell. The Blazers would head to a shootout for the second time this season.

Carroll University was the first to shoot, and they struck early when Leah Wiercinski placed one past a diving first year goalkeeper Megan Favorite (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove). The Blazers came right back as senior defender Kelsey Faber (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) scored to make the shootout 1-1. Carroll scored their next two goals, and so did the Blazers as sophomore forward Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier) and junior forward Paige Olson (Plymouth, MN, West Lutheran) found the back of the net to tie it 3-3. Carroll's Lauren Demski missed the next shot leaving the door open for the Blazers.

It was sophomore midfielder Laura Kosch (Eden Prairie, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's) who put the Blazers ahead 4-3 in the shootout. Carroll made is next shot to tie it 4-4 leaving it all up to first-year midfielder Ali O'Brien (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater). She already came up big earlier in the season winning the shootout against Macalester. Could she do it again….yes! Ali found the back of the net giving the Blazers a 5-4 shootout win, sending them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Blazers play Loras, who is ranked #9 in DIII this season at 1 pm tomorrow November 13 in Loras, Iowa.
