Blazer Ice Hockey Ties 2-2 in First MIAC Game

BOX SCORE

The College of Saint Benedict (2-2-1 overall, 0-0-1 MIAC) tied MIAC rival the University of Saint Thomas (0-0-2 overall, 0-0-1 MIAC) 2-2 tonight in an exciting match-up that was taken into overtime.

The Blazers came out strong in the first period and were able to hold the Tommies to only seven shots on goal. Saving all seven shots was sophomore goaltender Kaitlyn Rolando who would finish the game with an incredible 39 saves. The Blazers also struck first in scoring when senior forward Kerri Graske found the back of the net unassisted, nine minutes and ten seconds into the period.

The second and third periods showed a little more of a struggle for Saint Benedict as penalties went up and offensive aggression went down. The Blazers allowed 41 total shots on goal and only had 19 total to end their night. Out of the 41 one shots taken, only two got passed Rolando from Saint Thomas players Jenny Saxon and Jamie Tiede in the second period. Luckily sophomore forward Allyson Nielsen also scored from Saint Benedict in the second after being assisted by Ashley Olson and Megan Brettingen. Regulation ended with a score of 2-2 and the Blazers and Tommies tried to settle the match with one overtime period of five minutes.

Rolando had a huge impact on the game not only with her 39 total saves, but with three key saves she made in the overtime period. Two of them were back to back point blank shots with under a minute left on the clock. Overtime would end scoreless and the game concluded with the final score being Saint Benedict 2 - Saint Thomas 2.

The Blazers will be challenged once again by the Tommies tomorrow night on November 11th in St. Paul. The game is at 7:30 p.m. and will be the last of the two game series.
