Blazer Soccer Secures A Share of MIAC Title

Results

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (11-5-1 overall, 8-1-1 MIAC) scored two goals early to secure a 2-0 win against conference opponent Hamline (9-5-3 overall, 4-4-2 MIAC). This win gave the Blazers at least a share of the conference title for the first time since 2003.

The first half was all the Blazers needed to defeat conference opponent Hamline.  During the fifth minute, sophomore forward Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier) hit senior forward Heather Beshears (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) running up the right side of the field. Beshears turned and centered the ball perfectly to junior forward Jess Pellegrene (Maple Grove, MN, Totino-Grace) who nailed one past the Pipers goalkeeper for an early 1-0 Blazer lead.

Only 13 minutes later the Blazers struck again, as Heather Beshears laced a perfect shot from 20 yards out into the top left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead. This was the final score for the game as both goals came during the first 20 minutes. The Blazers recorded seven shots on goal in the game, while Hamline recorded six. Megan Favorite (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) saved all six shots, while recording her eighth shutout of the season.

The win today guaranteed the Blazers the number one seed in the MIAC Tournament.

The Blazers travel to Moorhead to play conference opponent Concordia for the final game of the season. If the Blazers win they will be the outright winner for the MIAC title. The game is set to take place at 1 pm on Saturday, Oct 29.
