Blazer Soccer Beats Saint Thomas 2-0, Retain First Place in MIAC

Results

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (8-4-1 overall, 6-1-1 MIAC) defeated conference opponent St. Thomas (6-4-2 overall, 4-2-2 MIAC) 2-0 Saturday in St. Paul, to stay in first place in the MIAC.

The Blazers who have not lost in their past seven conference games, came out strong against a tough St. Thomas team. Just 10 minutes into the first half, senior forward Heather Beshears (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) burnt the Tommie goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season.  She was assisted by sophomore forward Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier) to give the Blazers an early 1-0 lead.

Riding the momentum from the first half the Blazers never backed down. CSB cleared the ball out of their zone often and would rarely allow a shot on goal. During the 68 minute, first-year midfielder Alli O'Brien (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater) beat a few Tommie defenders and scored an unassisted goal to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead. This was all the Blazers needed to secure their sixth conference win and stay in first place in the MIAC.

First-year goalkeeper Megan Favorite (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) had four saves while recording her fifth shutout of the season, while Colleen Bouchard's assist was her third of the season. Alii O'Brien also added her third goal of the season.

The Blazers host non-conference opponent University of Wisconsin Stout at 3 pm on October 16 in St. Joseph, Minn.
