The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (7-4-1 overall, 5-1-1 MIAC) played tremendously Tuesday, as they defeated conference opponent Bethel (7-4-1 overall, 2-3-0 MIAC) in overtime 1-0, and moved into first place in the MIAC.
In a game that was dominated by offense, neither team could find the back of the net. The Blazers recorded 10 shots in the first half, four were on goal, and all of them were saved by Bethel goalkeeper Maria Guidarelli. Bethel recorded seven shots in the first half, also four were on goal, and all were saved by first-year goalkeeper
Megan Favorite (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove).
The second half was identical to the first half as each team recorded the same number of shots. Saint Ben's took the edge in corners nine to five in the game, but none of these opportunities would give the Blazers a lead. As the clock ran down, the Blazers attempted to make one push to end the game in regulation, but a goal was not mustered.
The Blazers had multiple scoring opportunities so far in the game, but nothing seemed to fall their way. Finally in the first overtime, sophomore forward
Kristina Burk (Westminster, CO, Holy Family) led sophomore forward
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier) perfectly. Bouchard corralled the ball and laced one past the Bethel goalkeeper from five yards out, to give the Blazers a 1-0 win in overtime.
Kristina Burk added her first assist of the season, while Bouchard added her fifth goal.
Megan Favorite added 7 saves, giving her 44 on the year.
The Blazers travel to play conference opponent St. Thomas at 1 pm on October 15 in St. Paul, Minn.
