The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team
(1-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC) just fell short to the Wartburg College Knights
(1-0 overall, 0-0 IIAC), 0-1 Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, MN.
Due to the defensive efforts of both teams the game remained scoreless until the 85th minute when the
Knights junior midfielder Katy Wendt tapped in a ball that just slipped by Blazers senior goalkeeper
Maija Schmelzer (Rochester, MN, John Marshall). Schmelzer was nearly perfect for the Blazers, stopping eight of nine shots, many which were from point blank range.
Saint Benedict remained disciplined in a physical game where there were fourteen fouls called. The Knights outshot the Blazers 14-9, holding the Blazers to one shot on goal.
The Blazers resume regular season play on Sunday September 5th when they host non conference opponent Cornell College at 3:30 p.m. in St. Jospeh, MN.
